Deficits in the ability to empathize with others can lead to misunderstanding other people’s actions or misinterpretation of facial expressions. This can result in interpersonal conflicts and promote the development of delusions or other positive symptoms. People with schizophrenia are often affected by impaired social cognition and, according to some studies, also have a strong need for certainty and desire for clarity in complex situations (i.e., intolerance of ambiguity, need for closure), which can also contribute to a distorted perception of social situations. In this learning unit, we show how the topic of empathy/social cognition is addressed in the MCT.
